Click on the above icon in the Zip file you extracted. The program will start and will place a blue tray icon in your taskbar.

To create a special thumbnail that you can move, resize, and crop, click on the the taskbar tray icon to bring up a list of previews. Click on the preview you want or scroll up and down to find it. You can move the special thumbnail created by just dragging it around. However, by default the program will dock the special thumbnails to the bottom of your screen. To change this setting, right-click on the tray icon and select "Settings".

Other things to know:

  • Double-clicking on a special thumbnail will close it.
  • Resize the thumbnail by either dragging its borders, scrolling the wheel on your mouse, or pressing the up/down arrow keys on your keyboard.
  • Crop the thumbnail by pressing Ctrl and then dragging the borders that show up.
  • Quit the program by selecting "Quit" from the right-click menu of the tray icon.
  • To make the previews ignore all input while they are showing, right-click on the tray icon and select "Make Previews Ignore Input".
  • By default, the program will move the window in the special thumbnail preview off your screen to the right so that it is out of your way. To bring the window back, select the "Show Target Window" option in the right-click menu or close the preview.
  • By default, the program will preview target windows from minimizing. This is required for live previews. To change this behavior (or the hiding of the target windows), go to "Settings" and select the "Behavior" tab.

Please note that ViP 0.1.2 is quite different from 0.1.1. Gone is the ability to store target window settings in a database for future use. This will be brought back in either the next release or the one after that. The database functionality was causing problems in 64-bit Vista and may have been the cause of a memory leak. Also, the ability to use keyboard commands to launch the previews have been removed and the functionality has been replaced by the tray icon launcher. There were too many issues with the hooks I was using to capture those commands. This feature will also be brought back at a future date.

Select "Settings" and go to the "Locations" tab to change the docking behavior. From the right-click menu, you are able to access the main functions of the program. They are pretty much self explanatory. The only thing you may have trouble with is the "Learn" function:

This function allows you to remember the size, cropping, and location of your current special thumbnail. In the future, the programming will automatically apply these settings to thumbnail previews for windows that have the same title.
